WEST SIDE STORY WORKSHOPS With Amanda Edge and Billy Ward

9-24-14

PART 1: SUNDAY, September 28, 2-4pm: “AMERICA”

PART 2: SUNDAY, October 5, 2-4pm: “COOL”

An American classic, West Side Story was the 1st musical to demand “triple threat” abilities from its performers, and Jerome Robbins won the Tony Award for his choreography. The film won 10 Academy Awards, and everyone fell in love with this modern-day Romeo and Juliet.

Billy was an understudy for the role of Baby John for the Paris tour of the show in the 1980s. In 1995, Jerome Robbins staged his West Side Story Suite for the New York City Ballet. Amanda was in the original cast, and at Mr. Robbins invitation, subsequently sang the role of Rosalia.

Before the holidays and Nutcracker are upon us, come learn these 2 incredible numbers! We’ll be singing and dancing, so be fearless: bring your best Broadway voice, your character heels, a playful skirt, and an attitude. Are you a Jet or a Shark?!

Cost: $20/person. Location: Ballet Conservatory of Asheville, 6 East Chestnut St., Asheville, NC

Sarah London Ballet Conservatory of Asheville

A Fond Farewell to Sarah London!

9-19-14

Our wonderfully talented Sarah London is moving. Her husband, Jeremy, has accepted a promotion with his company and they have decided to move to Greensboro, NC. We are extremely sad to loose Sarah, she has been such a tremendous part of our BCA family from the beginning, with her teaching, dancing and friendship.

We wish Sarah and Jeremy all the very best and although she will be missed terribly we are super excited for them in their young married life to head off and explore other places together. She has promised to be a frequent visitor so we will still get to see her occasionally. We are especially going to miss her zany sense of humor, but also the professionalism and grace she brought to all of our performances. Much love from us all at BCA!

Our New Studios Will Be Fabulous!

8-10-09

We'd love nothing more than to tell you exactly where Ballet Conservatory of Asheville (BCA) is going to be. But because of typical business-related issues, we can't do that ... at least not just yet.

What we can tell you is this: The building is beautiful, recently restored, and has ample room for numerous professional studios. Plus, it's located conveniently in North Asheville.

The studios will be fabulous. They'll be professionally outfitted in every respect: Sprung floors, marley surfaces, portable barres, and an outstanding sound system. We also have plans to add a class pianist -- that's right, a class pianist -- down the road.

The fact is BCA's dance training facility will be the entire package: Conveniently located, state-of-the-art, and designed by seasoned ballet professionals. Angie and Wayne have set the bar high -- and they won't settle for anything less.

About BCA

Ballet Conservatory of Asheville (BCA) offers dance programs for children, teens/adults, and pre-professionals. These programs include classes in nearly all major dance forms, including ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, broadway jazz, hip-hop, and modern. We want our students to gain good technique, learn proper class etiquette, and enjoy the wonderful world of dance. Every year, we produce the Nutcracker, Winter Works: Variations & Innovations, a full-length Spring ballet, our Spring recital, and Summer Intensive Showcase. We perform primarily at Asheville's  Diana Wortham Theatre, widely considered to be one of the finest dance venues in the U.S.  Our summer programs include open classes and workshops plus a month-long, all-day ballet training Summer Intensive.

BCA is headed by Director Angie Lynn, former professional dancer, who brings a rich background in ballet and other dance forms to the leadership of BCA. Angie, Wayne Burritt, and Christopher Lynn -- Managing Director and acting instructor -- founded BCA in 2009.

While BCA offers classes in all disciplines, we are primarily a ballet school with a strong Pre-Professional division. Our ballet classes are curriculum-based with strong foundations in the English School (Royal Academy of Dance) , incorporating other foundational techniques and styles of serious ballet instruction.

We use the ballets from the Russian, French & English tradition -- such as Giselle, Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Coppelia, and Sleeping Beauty -- to provide crucial performing and training opportunities for our students. Our experience has shown that serious dancers trained by our methods have encountered outstanding professional placement opportunities.

Label ALL Dancewear & personal items w/Name or Initials: shoes, leotards, tights, water bottles, etc. Unclaimed items are taken to donation centers frequently.

Never wear dance shoes outside dance studios. This tracks dirt & sand onto dance floors and wears out shoes.
A personal dance bag helps keep dancewear and other clothing organized.

Hair should back neatly tied back from face and in a bun for ballet girls age 10 and over.

Good hygiene & deodorant are important for teens. Ballet is athletic. Minimal perfume please.

Dance skirts are permitted occasionally for age 3-5. Leotard & tights allow best body-awareness for learning ballet.

Hooded Warm-Ups and pants specific to each dance level, are available at BCA studio.

Enrollment, Class Tuition And Fees

The BCA annual dance year runs mid-August through end of May and dance students enroll for the full dance year. Written withdrawal requests and should be received by BCA 30 days before withdrawal date. Students may enroll during the year if class space is available and with BCA permission.

Current tuition and fees are listed on current session's forms: Schedule and Fees and Registration Form. Both forms are available at BalletConservatoryofAsheville.com.

All students are required to register, established payment schedule, pay registration fee and initial tuition payment, and then maintain a paid balance to attend any BCA class, private lesson or workshop. Balances unpaid 30 days after due date should be settled before student continues to attend. Payments 7 days after due date will incur a $10 late fee.

Class Attendance

Students should arrive on time for class, no more than 10 minutes for children; and picked up promptly at the end of class. Attending all classes is important for progress and is the responsibility of each student. Please inform us if you will be missing a class. Classes missed due to sickness, school holidays and other obligations may be made up in another class. Credit or refunds will not be given for classes not attended.

Make Up Classes are encouraged when students miss their regular class. Please call the office if planning to attend a make up class to ensure there is space. Classes should be made up within 2 weeks, before or after the missed class. In case of inclement weather, call the studio or check the BCA website. We do not necessarily follow area school systems. Weather cancellations may not be rescheduled, but please make up in another class. Classes missed due to BCA rehearsals, performances or other unavoidable events will be rescheduled.

Facilities & Studios

We ask students & families to help maintain our studios & facilities. No Food in the studios and water only please. Unclaimed items are taken to donation centers frequently. Siblings should be supervised at all times. Please keep noise to a minimum, so dancers are not distracted.

Our studio windows allow parents & families to peek into class occasionally. Young dance students thrive when they can maintain focus with instructor for entire class period. We encourage minimal visual contact and please refrain from standing and viewing up-close to the studio windows.

Parking is currently available in BCA parking lot, across Mt. Clair in the gravel corner lot, on adjacent street and at Five Points Restaurant lot after 3pm.

Parent /Teacher Communication

Teachers are always happy to speak with parents! We will make every effort to keep you informed. If needed you may call or email the office to ask questions or schedule a convenient time for a conference. It is often difficult to speak with instructors at length between classes, as this delays the start of the next class.

Pre-Professional Program

Pre-professional program dancers should also consult the Pre-Pro Contract, Pre-Pro Handbook, Pre-Pro Schedule & Fees, and BalletConservatoryofAsheville.com/prepro for additional information, policies, fees, and requirements.
