BCA's Pre-Professional division prepares dancers ages 10 and up for careers in the dance profession, post-secondary dance programs and universities, conservatories, and other top pre-professional programs. They are routinely cast in soloist and corps de ballet roles in our productions. We encourage all talented young dancers to attend this audition. These auditions also serve as BCA’s Nutcracker auditions for pre-professionals.

Children's Program

Our classes for children 3 and up include ballet, pointe, modern, tap, broadway jazz, & hip-hop. Our talented young dancers often perform in the Nutcracker and Spring ballets. Children with a serious interest in ballet may want to learn more our Beginner Pre-Professional program.
Boys Program
Ballet Conservatory of Asheville -- Boys Program
BCA offers boys ages 7 and up a robust program of dance. Our experience has shown that well-trained boys are often offered full scholarships to many of the finest summer intensive programs. Boys also play important roles in many of BCA's ballets, especially the Nutcracker.
Teens + Adults

Our teens enjoy classes in ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. These classes are open to anyone and include beginner and intermediate level dancers.

Pre-Professional Division Auditions Sunday, August 9, 2015

Auditions for BCA's 2015-2016 Pre-Professional Division and Nutcracker 2015 will be held Sunday, August 9, 2015 at BCA Studios, 5 Points Bldg., 6 East Chestnut St., Asheville, NC, 28801.

1:00-2:00 Year 1 Pre-Professional program (rising 5th & 6th grade)

2:30-3:30 Year 2 Pre-Professional program (rising 6th & 7th grade)

4:00-5:00 Year 3 Pre-Professional program (rising 7th & 8th grade)

5:30-6:30 Year 5/7 Pre-Professional program (High school students)

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your audition to sign-in. Audition fee is $15. Girls should bring pointe shoes. These auditions also serve as BCA’s Nutcracker 2015 auditions for Pre-Professionals. BCA's Pre-Professional Division prepares dancers ages 10 and up for careers in the dance profession. They are routinely cast in soloist and corps de ballet roles in our productions of Nutcracker and a Spring Ballet. We encourage all talented young dancers to attend this audition.

All prospective dancers and their parents should be aware of the Pre-Professional division class, rehearsal, and contract requirements prior to the August 9 audition. Returning pre-professionals are required to audition.

If a dancer cannot make the August 9 audition, a make-up audition will be held. However we encourage you to attend the August 9 audition if at all possible since we will begin casting directly following that audition. Call 828-255-5777 for more make-up audition info.

Dancers will be notified of their results by email following their audition. If accepted, they will be required to sign the BCA Pre-Professional Contract, pay their fees, and enroll in their classes.

About John Selya

John Selya was born in New York City and trained at the School of American Ballet, where he studied with Richard Rapp, Andrei Kramarevski, and Stanley Williams. He joined American Ballet Theatre in 1988, where he danced roles such as Birbanto and Lankendem in Le Corsaire, Lead Gypsy in Don Quixote, Head Fakir in Natalia Makarova's La Bayadere, Dr. Coppelius in Coppelia, and the Ugly Stepsister in Ben Stevenson's Cinderella.  He has choreographed several ballets for ABT, including Moondance, Jack and Jill, Don't Panic, Turnstile, and Disposition. He has also choreographed for Houston Ballet, the Oregon Ballet Theatre, School of American Ballet, and ABT's Studio Company.  In addition, he co-choreographed an evening of new pieces presented as part of the Guggenheim Museum's "Works and Process" series.  In 2000, Selya joined Twyla Tharp Dance.  Selya appeared in the 2010 Broadway musical Come Fly Away in which Twyla Tharp choreographed songs sung by Frank Sinatra. He previously appeared in the Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls (2009) as Scranton Slim, in Damn Yankees as Eddie/Mambo Dancer (2008), and in The Times They Are A-Changin' as Lucibeal (2006). He played the character "Eddie" in the show Movin' Out for which he received the 2003 Tony and Drama Desk nominations for Best Male Dancer and Lead Actor in a musical and won the 2003 TDF/Astaire Award for Best Male Dancer in a Musical and the Theater World Award.

A Midsummer Night's Dream Opens Tonight!

Ballet Conservatory is delighted to present A Midsummer Night's Dream tonight Friday, May 29 at 7:00 at the Diana Wortham Theatre in Asheville. Based on Shakespeare's sparkling comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream -- and with gorgeous music by Felix Mendelssohn -- the ballet tells the tale of Oberon, Titania, Puck, and four hapless young people in love lost in a forest inhabited by mysterious Fairies. Featuring Julia Fleming as Titania, Charlotte Ballet's Gregory Taylor as Oberon, Avery Sund and Caroline Roberts as Puck, and talented dancers from our Pre-Professional Division, this production of A Midsummer Night's Dream is perfect for the entire family. Once again, dancers in Ballet Conservatory's Pre-Professional Division won acceptances and scholarships to summer intensives at some of the finest ballet institutions in the U.S., including American Ballet Theatre (NYC & Other Sites), Boston Ballet, Kirov (DC), Pacific Northwest Ballet, and School of American Ballet, to name just a few. Many of our students will also stay at home for BCA's summer intensive. The quality of these accepting institutions and our dancers' sheer volume of acceptances are clear testaments to these talented young artists' hard work, dedication, and skill. Congrats! Ballet Conservatory’s Pre-Professional dancers enjoyed two Master Classes from New York City Ballet Principal Daniel Ulbricht on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at BCA studios. Daniel’s classes were wonderful and the dancers were delighted. Daniel also gave an informative Q&A with the dancers.

Ballet Conservatory's Master Class Series with Daniel Ulbricht will continue on Monday, March 16, 2015. He will teach an Intermediate/Advanced Ballet Open Master Class (Ages 13+) from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Diana Wortham Theatre. This Master Class is open to everyone in the dance community. About Daniel Ulbricht

Daniel was invited to join the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during their Winter Program. As a student at SAB, he performed with New York City Ballet as a Jester in Peter Martins' The Sleeping Beauty. In December 2000, Daniel became an apprentice with New York City Ballet and in November 2001 he joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet. In January 2005, Daniel was promoted to the rank of soloist and principal dancer in May 2007.  Learn more about Daniel Ulbricht.

Ballet Conservatory Presents Winter Works: Innovations and Variations March 7 at Diana Wortham Theatre

Ballet Conservatory will present Winter Works:  Innovations and Variations on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 7pm at the Diana Wortham Theatre.  Winter Works will be danced by Ballet Conservatory's acclaimed Pre-Professional company and includes six premiere dance works encompassing a variety of dance styles, from classical ballet to modern dance to Broadway jazz.

New York City Ballet's Amanda Edge and Billy Ward of New York City Opera Ballet will headline the evening, including an intimate duet from Broadway's “Swing”, choreographed by Tony Award Nominee Lynne Taylor-Corbett. Ms. Edge and Mr. Ward will also contribute contemporary ballet premieres inspired by winter trees, Degas' painted dancers and baroque classics.

Composer and pianist Chad Lawson will accompany “She Walk's in Beauty”, choreographed by Wayne Burritt, Ballet Conservatory's ballet master. Mr. Lawson's 2014 CD, The Chopin Variations was iTunes #1 Classical Debut, plus Billboard's #4 Classical Crossover Debut. He toured as Julio Eglesias' keyboardist and earned the review "The classical CD for people that hate classical music", from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Additional choreography by Lindsey Kelley and Alisha Ear of Ballet Conservatory's modern dance faculty will round out the evening's innovations.

Ballet Conservatory of Asheville will hold its SIXTH ballet intensive June 22 to July 18, 2015! The intensive is geared toward talented dancers ages 10 and up with a serious interest in ballet. Daily classes include intense, professional instruction in ballet, pointe, variations, partnering, men's class, modern, jazz, pilates, and special projects. Auditions are Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015 or by DVD. Room & Board available. Former Guest Faculty includes Amanda Edge (NYCB, Broadway, now with BCA), Nick Kepley (Motion Dance Theatre, Ballet Austin, Broadway), Courtney Elizabeth Stewart (San Francisco Ballet), and Billy Ward (New York City Opera, now with BCA), among others. Enjoy Summer 2015 With BCA June 3 to August 15!

During summer 2015, BCA offers a wide variety of open ballet classes as well as special "themed" ballet workshops for children. These classes and workshops are ideal for any dancer from beginner to professional. Classes are offered at affordable summer rates and convenient class times. We are also delighted during Summer 2015 to have former ABT dancer and Broadway star John Selya teach a series of Master Classes. Plus, we are adding a "Petite Summer Intensive" for dancers ages 8 to10! And of course, BCA's summer intensive offers serious young dancers ages 10 plus a month-long, all-day ballet ballet training intensive. It runs from June 22 to July 18.

Children’s Summer Workshops

All workshops meet Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 12:30, and are for ages 5 to 7 & 8 to 11. Fees are $165 per week ($155 if paid by 4-25-15) plus $10 summer registration fee for new students. Take $15 off for each additional workshop/sibling. Ballet and Modern class each week, except 7-20-15 and 7-27-15.

Final Showcase each Friday at noon. Ask about our Full Day option.

Non-technique classes include acting for dancers, nutrition, injury prevention, and ballet history. Admission is by audition or DVD. Welcome to Ballet Conservatory of Asheville

Welcome! We're Ballet Conservatory of Asheville (BCA) and we're delighted you've taken the opportunity to learn more about us. We offer dance programs for children, teens/adults, and pre-professionals. Included are classes in nearly every major dance form, from ballet and pointe to tap, jazz, hip-hop and modern. We welcome all dancers with any level of experience from ages 3 to adult. In addition to our regular school year programs, we also offer summer classes & workshops for all ages and a summer intensive for serious ballet dancers.

Our philosophy is simple: We want our students to gain good technique, learn proper class etiquette, and enjoy the wonderful world of dance. And while we offer classes in all disciplines, we are primarily a ballet school with a strong pre-professional training program.

Our faculty brings rich professional backgrounds and outstanding teaching and education credentials. BCA's leadership team includes Angie Lynn (Director), Wayne Burritt (Ballet Master), and Christopher Lynn (Managing Director). Our professional facilities are located in the 5 Points Building, 6 East Chestnut Street, Asheville, North Carolina.

We produce the Nutcracker, a Spring ballet, and a Recital each year. Our performances are produced at Asheville's Diana Wortham Theatre, widely considered to be one of the finest dance venues in the U.S.

How To Enroll

Enrolling in BCA's programs is easy. First, discover our different programs and what classes you are interested in. Then, download and fill out a registration form. At that point, please feel free to give us a call at 828-255-5777 or drop by our studios at 6 East Chestnut Street, Asheville. We can help you decide which classes are ideal for you, space availability, and fees. We'll then give you the details about your classes, a copy of our policies and procedures, and you'll be all set.
